One year ago today, on February 22nd 2011 at 12:51pm, Christchurch was hit by a powerful magnitude 6.3 earthquake that severely damaged infrastructure and was the primary cause to the loss of 185 lives. The earthquake was centered 10 kilometers (6 miles) south-east of the centre of the city. It followed nearly six months after the magnitude 7.1 earthquake of 4th September 2010, which caused significant damage to Christchurch and the central Canterbury region, but had no direct fatalities.
